Symbolism

Shield.  The first shield depicts the flag of the United States of America, honoring those who served on the USS CANBERRA (CA-70) during World War II.  The second shield bears the colors blue and gold, from the flag of the Australian Capital Territory.  The constellation of stars refers to the Southern Cross and further alludes to the Canberra city flag.  The lightning flash suggests swiftness and power, as portrayed by the Littoral Combat Ship.  The kangaroo is a native animal of Australia, symbolizing forward momentum and the “Can do!” spirit of every seaman that has sailed under the namesake of Canberra.   The bandage on the kangaroo’s tail suggests difficulties that have been encountered and pays homage to USS CANBERRA’S (CA-70) seal.

Crest.  The wreath adapts the colors of the first metal and the first color of the shield.  The portcullis guarding the gum tree signifies the growth and progress of the great capital city of Canberra.  On each side of the portcullis are seven swan feathers, alluding to the people and legislature of the city.  These elements can also be found on the coat of arms of the Australian Capital Territory.  Lastly, the seven-pointed star refers to the federation of Australia, also known as the Commonwealth Star of Australia.

Supporters.  The crossed sword and cutlass symbolize the officers and enlisted crew that sail the ship, demonstrating teamwork and cooperation by the naval team of the USS CANBERRA (LCS 30).

Motto.  The scroll bears the colors blue and gold.  The motto “CAN DO!” describes the confident and willing spirit to accomplish the mission of the Navy.  The stars denote the seven battle stars awarded to the USS CANBERRA (CA-70) for her service in World
War II.

Seal.  The coat of arms as blazoned in full color on a white oblong disc within a Navy blue designation band, edged with a gold roped border and bearing the name “USS CANBERRA” at the top and “LCS 30” at the base.
